Behind the build.
Guide Architecture is providing full architectural and interior design services for the vertical expansion of the Cabarrus Heart and Vascular Tower at Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord, North Carolina. Currently in the Construction Documents phase, the project involves an overbuild that adds three new patient floors—Levels 5, 6, and 7—above the existing Level 4 to accommodate a total of 90 new inpatient beds. The design features 30 new ICU beds on Level 5 and 60 medical/surgical beds on Levels 6 and 7, supported by decentralized nurse stations, staff support spaces, and updated building infrastructure, all aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and patient care.
The scope also includes the addition of an underground water storage tank beneath the drive adjacent to the tower to enhance fire protection capacity. Structural and MEP systems are being carefully coordinated to integrate the new floors with the existing facility while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations. Guide Architecture is collaborating closely with Atrium Health leadership, engineering consultants, and the construction team to deliver a technically complex, phased expansion that supports Atrium’s continued growth and its mission to advance cardiovascular and critical care services in the region.
